• CRCA researcher Micha Cárdenas wrote a chapter in Kate Bornstein and S. Bear Bergman's new collection of essays entitled Gender Outlaws: the Next Generation. Her book chapter is titled "I am Transreal: A reflection on/of Becoming Dragon".

    The book's summary reads as follows: "In the 15 years since the release of Gender Outlaw, Kate Bornstein’s groundbreaking challenge to gender ideology, transgender narratives have made their way from the margins to the mainstream and back again.   • On Tuesday, May 25, 2010 Toshiro Yamada presented "Surround Sound Panning Technique Based on a Virtual Microphone Array" paper at the Audio Engineering Society (AES) convention. The paper gives acknowledgment to CRCA for contribution in equipment and laboratory facilities. Please read the short summary of the paper and presentation.

    "A multichannel panning technique is presented, which aims at reproducing a plane wave with an array of loudspeakers. The loudspeaker gains are computed by solving an acoustical inverse problem. The latter involves the inversion of a matrix of transfer functions between the loudspeakers and the elements of a virtual microphone array, the center of which corresponds to the location of the listener. The radius of the virtual microphone array is varied consistently with the frequency, in such a way that the transfer function matrix is independent of the frequency. As a consequence, the inverse problem is solved for one frequency only, and the loudspeaker coefficients obtained can be implemented using simple gains."

  • Dutch Museum Opens Design Exhibition by Lev Manovich

    San Diego, May 11, 2010 -- Some 18,000 visitors attended opening day in mid-April at the Graphic Design Festival in The Netherlands. A major attraction at this year’s festival was the start of an exhibition called “Shaping Time,” a work by UC San Diego Visual Arts Professor Lev Manovich and his colleagues Jeremy Douglass and William Huber in CRCA & Calit2’s Software Studies Initiative (SSI).

  • CRCA Technical Director, Todd Margolis, spent last week in the UK at the University of Northampton. He was there to meet with researchers from the NVision group to discuss next generation media systems for art, science and technology. He also met with the Vice Chancellor, the Deans for the Schools of Science and Technology and the Arts as well as many other art, science and computing faculty. The NVision team are in the final phase of installing their new immersive and interactive visualization systems including the first 5 sided CAVE in the UK and several high resolution single wall VR systems as well as a 512 core High Performance Computational (HPC) cluster. CRCA & NVision look forward to exciting new collaborations between Southern California and Northamptonshire.

  • CRCA researcher William Brent will be working at the College of Arts and Sciences, American University in Washington D.C, in the Audio Technology program this upcoming August 2010. It is the second tenure track position that has been created for the Audio Technology program. With more students enrolling in the program, there is more demand to teach additional courses on synthesis, digital instrument design, and digital signal processing. William will be offering some of these courses on his first year in the program. He will also be continuing his research in the instrument design and timbre analysis projects started here at CRCA.
